Dressing for Each Body Type

07 Mar 2019

Each woman’s body is different, and with a wide variety of apparel out there, it can be difficult to know what looks best with your body type. When you try on different outfits, you have probably noticed that some pieces look fantastic on you but then others that seem to showcase parts of your body that you want to hide. Things such as layering shirts and essential shirts usually can help with any outfit, but when it comes to finding a full outfit that works with your body type, there are specific tips that can help. Here is a guide on what you can wear with each body type.

Pear-Shape

A pear-shaped body type entails a woman that has narrow shoulders and hips that are wider than her top-halve. Pear-shapes need to look for clothing pieces that will lengthen their body.

As far as tops go, look for pieces that will accentuate your chest and shoulders. This includes V-necks, scoop necks, bell sleeves, and fitted tops. A classic cap sleeve shirt will look great on your pear-shape body. If you are wearing a layering shirt, you can add any sweater or jacket that hits mid-thigh or right at your waist. Boxy coats and jackets will also look fantastic on you.

When you are shopping for pants, you want to buy darker colors that won’t draw attention to your waist and hips. If you want to appear taller or balance proportions, bootcut or flare jeans are a great option.
Dresses and skirts go well with dramatic sleeves; A-line cuts and embellished necklines will draw attention to the top of your body. To finish off your outfit nicely, add some statement necklaces, big earrings, and even a wide-brimmed hat.

Hourglass Shape

The hourglass body type truly resembles an hourglass. While the chest and shoulder area is proportionately equal with the waist, the naval area curves inward dramatically. If you have an hourglass shape, you should wear clothes that help show off that curve and define the slim line between your chest and waist.

Your tops should be more form-fitting and tailored. Look for wrap tops, peplums, V-necks and round neck shirts. When layering, you can add a chic blazer or a stylish bomber jacket.

High waisted pants or skinny jeans will look best on you because they are more fitted. In addition, wrap dresses and empire silhouette dresses look great because of their classic tailored look.

To tie your look together, skinny belts around the waist look fantastic. And of course, adding jewelry around the neck or collarbone will also look great!

Apple-Shape

Apple-shapes are similar to an upside down triangle. Your shoulders are a little larger than your hips, and you probably don’t have as well defined of a waist. You will want to wear pieces that will define your bust while showing off your legs or your arms.

Since you are bigger up top, you want to look for flowy or boyfriend fitting tops. An A-line sheer blouse with a layering shirt underneath is a classic look for any apple shape. Another way that apple body types can wear a layering shirt or cap sleeve shirt is with a cardigan or jacket that hits on your upper thigh. If you can find jackets that are straight or A-line, they will look flattering on you as well.

One great thing about apple-shapes is that almost any pair of pants will look good on you. You can wear classic skinny jeans, cropped ankle pants, or even a flare style to help make you look taller. It’s all a matter of preference.

When accessorizing your outfit, try sticking to more simple necklaces. However, big stacks of bracelets, statement rings, and larger earrings should be a common additional piece.

Athletic Shape

If you have an athletic shape, it means that you do not have as many dramatic curves — your shoulders and hips are equally proportioned like a rectangle. Your waist is more straight and your weight is even throughout your body. When picking out an outfit, look for pieces that either show off your top or bottom, but not both at the same time.

Tops that can be tucked into a pair of pants or skirt are a great option for the athletic shape because they help to accentuate your waist. Try sticking to scoop or round neck shirts, or even a cap sleeve shirt. You can also layer the top and use layering shirts as a solid foundation.

When choosing outerwear, try looking for more flowy pieces. This would include pea coats or A-line jackets that also hit either below the waist or below the knee. Whatever pants you decide to wear is all dependent on the top you choose. If you choose a loose blouse, then you might want to pair it with your skinny jeans.

As far as accessories go, what you wear depends on what aspect of your body you want to show off. To draw attention towards the top of your body, wear a big pair of earrings. To draw attention to your chest, wear a statement necklace. If you want your arms to appear longer, add some rings. If you have longer arms, add bracelets.
